On Tuesday, Brown said that he doesn’t think taxpayers’ money should be spent to help adults with HIV who “caused it by the way they live.” Brown previously said that he does not “condone spending taxpayers’ money to help people living in perverted lifestyles,” according to the Winston-Salem Journal.
The Human Rights Campaign believes these remarks help spread HIV and AIDS by discouraging citizens from getting tested and seeking treatment.
Brown believes government aid should instead go towards juvenile diabetes, autism and both mental and physical disabilities, where he believes there is not enough support. While Brown acknowledges that people who are HIV-positive “have legitimate fears and probably need support,” he said he believes their treatment should be at their individual or insurance expense and not the government.
